The Lantingji Xu is a famous piece of Chinese calligraphy. Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing. A man named Wang Xizhi wrote it a long time ago. He wrote it during a spring party at the Orchid Pavilion.

At the party, friends sat by a flowing stream. They floated cups of wine on the water. If a cup stopped in front of you, you wrote a poem. Wang wrote this piece as a preface, or an introduction, to those poems. He used a brush made of weasel whiskers. He wrote on soft paper made from cocoons.

His writing style is called running script. This means the strokes look smooth and flowing. The words look like they are dancing. Wang wrote 324 characters in 28 columns. He even wrote the same character 20 times, but each one looked different!

The original paper is lost today. Many people have made copies over the years. Some scholars wonder if the copies are perfect. Others study old stone rubbings to learn more. A rubbing is a way to copy writing from a stone surface using ink and paper.
