Ink wash painting

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Ink wash painting is a special kind of art.

It uses black ink in many shades. Artists make light gray or deep black ink. They do this by adding more or less water. This art began in China during the Tang dynasty. It later spread to Japan and Korea.

This art is not about making a perfect copy. The goal is to show the spirit of a thing. To paint a horse, an artist must know its mood. To paint a flower, they show its life.

Many artists paint mountains and forests. These scenes might be real or imaginary.

Artists use the "Four Treasures" to work. These are the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone.

They grind an inkstick on the stone with water. They use brushes made of animal hair. Once a stroke hits the paper, it stays. You cannot erase it. This makes the art very hard to master. It takes many years of practice to learn. Artists must be very calm and focused.
