It sits in the northwest part of the country. It is shaped like a vase. The lake is very old. It formed 36 million years ago.

Many rivers flow into the lake. The Catatumbo River is the biggest one. It provides 57% of the water. Because of this, the south part has fresh water. The north part is salty because it connects to the sea.

This place is very special. It has the most frequent lightning on Earth! The bright flashes can help boats see at night. The area is also famous for oil. People find oil and gas under the water and land. This makes it a busy place for work.

Many people live near the lake. They catch fish like shrimp and crabs. Some people live in colorful houses on stilts. They grow crops like bananas and cocoa too. However, the water faces problems. Oil leaks and waste can make the water dirty. This is hard for the plants and animals that live there.
