Many people call it the "Beloved Land of the Sun." This is because the sun shines there often.

Long ago, Arawak and Carib peoples lived in the area. Some tribes even built houses on stilts in the lake. Later, Spanish explorers tried to start the city many times. It was finally founded in 1574. For a long time, pirates attacked the city. They came by sea to take treasures.

In 1917, people found petroleum, which is a type of oil. This helped the city grow very fast. Today, the oil industry is a big part of the economy. A huge bridge connects the city to the rest of the country.
