Lake Maracaibo is a massive body of water in northwestern Venezuela.

It sits between the states of Zulia, Trujillo, and Mérida. While many people call it a lake, it acts more like an estuary or a bay. This is because it connects to the Gulf of Venezuela through a narrow strait. If you counted it as a lake, it would be the largest in South America. It is also one of the oldest lakes on Earth. It formed about 36 million years ago when the Andes Mountains rose up.

Water flows into the lake from many different places. The Catatumbo River is the biggest source of water. It provides 57% of all the water that enters the lake. Other rivers like the Santa Ana and the Escalante also flow in. Because of these rivers, the southern part of the lake has fresh water. The northern part is a bit salty because of the sea. The lake is shaped like a large vase. It is very deep in the south and much shallower in the north.

People have lived near these waters for a very long time. The local tribes used to call the area Coquivacoa. When European explorers arrived in 1499, they saw houses built on stilts. These houses reminded them of the city of Venice in Italy. This is how the region got the name Venezuela, which means "Little Venice." Later, the city of Maracaibo was successfully built in 1574. In 1962, a huge structure called the General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge was finished. This bridge connects the eastern and western coasts of the lake.

This area is a very busy place for work and nature. The lake is famous for having huge amounts of oil and gas. It is often called the "oil lake" because of this. Many people also work as fishermen here. There are more than 20,000 fishermen who catch things like shrimp and crabs. You might even see the West Indian manatee or the Amazon river dolphin. The water is also home to 145 different kinds of fish. Some of these fish, like the Maracaibo wolf anchovy, live only here.

There is a special weather event that happens here every year. The southern part of the lake has the most frequent lightning on Earth. These storms can happen about 297 days every year. At its strongest, there can be 28 lightning strikes every single minute! This bright light can even help boats find their way at night. However, the lake faces some hard jobs today. Oil leaks and waste from cities can make the water dirty. This can cause thick green algae to grow and hurt the living things in the water.
