Laila's journey to the ring was quite unique. Before she was a fighter, she worked as a manicurist. She even owned her own nail salon. She decided to start boxing when she was 18 years old. She was inspired after watching a fight by Christy Martin. Her father did not think women should box. He was also worried about the danger of the sport. Laila shared her big decision during an interview on Good Morning America.

Her boxing career was full of many important wins. In her very first match, she fought April Fowler in New York. Laila won by a knockout in the first round. She later fought Jacqui Frazier-Lyde in a match called Ali/Frazier IV. This was a special fight because their fathers had a famous trilogy of matches. This event was also the first big pay-per-view match between two women. Laila won that fight by a majority decision after eight rounds. She also beat her original inspiration, Christy Martin, in 2003.

Laila won many different championship belts during her time in the ring. She held titles from the WBC, which is the World Boxing Council. She also won titles from the WIBA, the IBA, and the IWBF. These belts show that a boxer is a world champion. She won the IWBF light heavyweight title by beating Gwendolyn O'Neil in 2004. In 2005, she became the second woman to win a WBC title. She won many of her matches by a technical knockout, or TKO. This happens when a referee stops the fight to keep a boxer safe.

After boxing, Laila found much success on television. She was a contestant on the show Dancing with the Stars. Even though she had no dance training, she did very well. One judge even gave her a perfect score of 10 for her rumba. She also hosted a show called American Gladiators. Laila has also appeared on shows like Fashion Police and The Biggest Loser. She continues to be a well-known person in many different areas of life.
