He was born in Pantin, France. His father worked in a match factory. A strike meant his father lost his pay. This meant Léon had to stop school. He started working at the factory at age sixteen. He soon became a leader in his union. A union is a group that helps workers.

Jouhaux wanted better lives for workers. He wanted an eight-hour workday. He wanted paid holidays for all. In 1936, he helped sign a deal for these rights. This deal helped many French workers.

World War II was a very hard time. Jouhaux supported his country. He was arrested and sent to a camp. He was later freed by troops in 1945. After the war, he started a new group called Workers' Force.

He also helped start the International Labour Organization. This group helps workers around the world. In 1951, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. This is a big prize for peace. Many streets in France are named for him today.
