These groups talk to bosses to make things fair. Jouhaux wanted an eight-hour workday for everyone. He also wanted workers to have paid holidays. He believed in collective bargaining, which is when a group negotiates for rights. These goals helped create a better life for many families.

Jouhaux was born in Pantin, France, in 1879. His father worked in a match factory in Aubervilliers. Because of a strike, his father lost his earnings. This meant Léon had to stop his schooling. He started working at the factory at age sixteen. In 1900, he served in the military in French Algeria. He later joined a strike about white phosphorus used in factories.

His leadership grew very quickly in the union movement. In 1906, he joined the General Confederation of Labour, or CGT. He became the secretary-general of the CGT in 1909. He held this big job until 1947. In 1936, he signed the Matignon Agreement. This deal gave many new rights to French workers.
