A trade union is an organized group of workers. These groups work together to protect the rights of employees. Jouhaux dedicated his life to improving the lives of the working class. His leadership helped shape modern labor laws in France and internationally. He is best known for his long service to the General Confederation of Labour (CGT). He also became a Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1951.

Jouhaux's early life was shaped by the challenges of the working class. He was born in Pantin, France, in 1879. His father worked in a match factory located in Aubervilliers. Financial difficulties changed the course of his education. A strike caused his father to lose his earnings. Because of this, Jouhaux had to end his secondary schooling early. He began working at the factory when he was sixteen years old. This experience made him an active part of the union movement very quickly.

His path to leadership included several significant turning points. After a brief military service in French Algeria, he returned to labor activism. In 1900, he joined a strike regarding the use of white phosphorus. This substance had blinded his father during his work. Although he was dismissed from his job, he eventually returned through union influence. In 1906, he was elected as a representative to the CGT. He rose through the ranks of this organization with great speed. By 1909, he became the secretary-general, a role he held until 1947.

Jouhaux focused on specific goals to improve the lives of workers. He campaigned for the eight-hour workday to prevent exhaustion. He also fought for the right to collective bargaining. This is the process where unions negotiate terms with employers. Additionally, he advocated for the right to paid holidays. One of his greatest successes was the Matignon Agreement in 1936. As a signatory to this agreement, he helped secure many new rights for French workers. This era is often called the Popular Front.

World War II brought immense hardship and danger to Jouhaux. Before the war, he organized mass protests against the conflict. However, once the war began, he supported France against Nazi Germany. He believed a Nazi victory would destroy democracy across Europe. Due to his stance, he was arrested and imprisoned. He was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. Later, he was moved to Castle Itter. He was finally freed in 1945 during a battle involving both American and German troops.

After the war, Jouhaux continued his influential work in new ways. He decided to split from the CGT to form a new group. This social-democratic organization was called Workers' Force, or CGT-FO. His influence extended far beyond the borders of France. He was instrumental in establishing the International Labour Organization (ILO). He also held high positions in the International Federation of Trade Unions. Later, he served in the World Federation of Trade Unions until that body split.

His lifelong commitment to peace and labor earned him global recognition. In 1951, the Nobel Committee awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize. This honor recognized his decades of union activity in the name of peace. His legacy remains visible in French geography today. Many streets in cities like Paris, Lyon, and Grenoble are named the rue Léon Jouhaux. He is buried in the famous Le Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. His life serves as a major example of how organized labor can change society.
