He was born in Paris in 1872. He grew up in a Jewish family. As a young man, he was a lawyer and a writer. He loved books and wrote about them. He even dressed in fancy suits and top hats.

Blum became very interested in politics during a hard time called the Dreyfus Affair. This was a case where a man was treated unfairly. Blum worked hard to help prove the man was innocent. This led him to join the socialist party. He wanted to make life fairer for all workers.

He served as Prime Minister three times. In 1936, he made big changes for workers. He helped them get better rights. During a war in Spain, he kept France neutral. This helped stop the fighting from spreading to his country.

Later, things became very difficult. During World War II, Germany took over France. Blum was sent to a prison camp called Buchenwald. After the war, he helped lead France again. He died in 1950.
