Weill was born in Germany to a Jewish family. His father, Albert Weill, served as a cantor. A cantor is a person who leads music in a religious service. Weill started taking piano lessons when he was only twelve years old. By 1913, he was already writing his own music. He wanted his music to have a socially useful purpose. This idea is sometimes called Gebrauchsmusik. He believed music could do more than just sound pretty.

Weill learned music in many different ways. He studied with many teachers to learn how to lead an orchestra. He also studied how to write many musical parts at once.

One of his most important teachers was Ferruccio Busoni. Busoni helped Weill move away from traditional styles. Instead of just showing how a character feels, Weill used music to comment on the story. This helped change how people experienced theater. He even worked as a pianist in a tavern to help support his family. He also taught music theory to private students for a few years.

His career in Germany became very successful during the 1920s. He worked closely with a writer named Bertolt Brecht.

Together, they created the famous Threepenny Opera in 1928. This show includes the very well-known song "Mack the Knife." Weill also worked on other shows like Happy End and the opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. These works were popular and helped reform how opera worked on a modern stage. He even worked with a banjo player named Mike Danzi. Weill wrote specific parts just for the banjo to make the music sound right. He was a leading voice in the German music world.

Life changed for Weill because of the rise of the Nazi regime. Because he was Jewish and had certain political views, he was not safe in Germany.

He fled his home country in 1933. He first went to live in Paris. Later, he moved to the United States in 1935. He settled in New York City with his wife, Lotte Lenya. In America, he became a big part of musical theater. He wrote famous works like Lady in the Dark and Street Scene. He continued to make music that people loved in his new home.

Weill's life shows how music connects to history and people. He moved from the classical music of Germany to the musical theater of America. His work helped bridge the gap between different kinds of art. Even though he faced hard times, he kept creating. His wife, Lotte Lenya, helped keep his music alive after he died. She even started the Kurt Weill Foundation to help people learn about his work. Today, many people still listen to his songs and watch his shows. His music remains a special part of our world.
