He was born on February 10, 1898, in Augsburg, Germany. He wrote many plays, poems, and even scripts for movies. Brecht was known for his unique way of making art. He wanted his work to be more than just a show. He wanted his plays to make people think deeply about the world. This goal stayed with him throughout his entire life.

Brecht created a special style called epic theatre.

He also called it dialectical theatre later in his life. He did not want the audience to just watch a story. Instead, he used new ways to help people notice what was happening. He often worked with a group of friends called a collective. One friend, Caspar Neher, designed the sets for his plays. These sets helped create a very specific look for his theatre.

Brecht's early life in Germany helped shape his writing. His mother was a Protestant and his father was a Catholic.

Because of his mother, he knew the Bible very well. This knowledge had a lasting effect on his many poems and plays. He also studied drama at Munich University starting in 1917. During this time, he began writing under the name "Bert Brecht." He even won the Kleist Prize for his first three plays.

Life became very difficult when the Nazis took power in 1933. Brecht had to flee his home country to stay safe. He first moved to Scandinavia for a while. Later, he moved to Southern California in the United States.

In Hollywood, he worked as a screenwriter for films. While he lived there, the FBI kept a close watch on him. In 1947, he was asked to testify about his political beliefs.

After his time in America, Brecht returned to Europe. He eventually settled in East Berlin to build a new life.

He and his wife, Helene Weigel, started a theatre called the Berliner Ensemble. They worked together as partners in both life and art.
