Berlin had a very unique way of making his music. He actually could not read printed sheet music at all. He was also a limited piano player who only played in one key. To fix this, he used a special piano with a transposing lever. This tool helped him play in different musical keys easily. He often wrote lyrics first and then added the tunes later. This happened by chance when a publisher thought his lyrics already had music.

His journey began in the Russian Empire long ago.

He was born Israel Beilin on May 11, 1888. His family left Russia to escape difficult times called pogroms. They traveled to the United States and arrived at Ellis Island in 1893. The family lived in crowded areas of New York City. As a young boy, he sold newspapers to help his family. He even once fell into a river while delivering papers.
