Kra Isthmus

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Kra Isthmus is a thin strip of land. It is in Southern Thailand. It is the narrowest part of the Malay Peninsula. This land sits between two big bodies of water. One is the Andaman Sea. The other is the Gulf of Thailand. At its narrowest point, the distance is only 44 km. This point is between the cities of Kra Buri and Chumphon.

Mountains run through this area. The land marks a spot between two mountain chains. One part of the chain is the Phuket Range. This range is part of the Tenasserim Hills. Many tall trees grow in this region. These are called dipterocarps. They are the main trees in the local rain forests.

Some people have a big idea for this place. They want to build a canal. A canal is a man-made water path. This path would join the two seas. It would help ships travel from India to China. Ships could avoid the Strait of Malacca. This would make many boat trips much faster.
