Most of the land is part of the main island, called Ualung. This name means "the high island." A few smaller islands sit near the coast in the reef. One important neighbor is Lelu Island, where about 1,500 people live.

The island has many different parts to explore. Mount Finkol is the highest point on the land.

Near the coast, you can find the Kosrae International Airport. It sits on an artificial island made by people. A new bridge connects this airport island to the main island. The ocean around the island is filled with coral reefs. These reefs stay in very good shape because of special mooring buoys. Divers visit to see hard corals that are thousands of years old. Hikers also enjoy the green hills and the mangrove systems.

History is found in many places across the island. People settled on Kosrae a long time ago. The city of Leluh was a very important place from 1250 to 1850 AD.

It had burial pyramids for noble leaders. Later, different groups from far away arrived. A French ship visited the island in 1824. The Spanish navigator Álvaro de Saavedra saw the island in 1529. In the 1800s, many people moved to the island to teach religion. By the 1870s, most people had become Christians.

Many different nations have had a role in Kosrae's story. After the Spanish-American War, Germany bought the islands in 1898. Later, Japan took control during World War I. During World War II, Japanese soldiers built tunnels into the mountain peaks.

You can still explore these tunnel bunkers today. In 1945, the United States began to rule the island. Eventually, Kosrae joined with other districts to form the Federated States of Micronesia. Today, it is a democratic state with its own governor.

Life on the island uses a mix of old and new ways. The people speak Kosraean and English. They use the U.S. dollar as their money.
