Kos is the third largest island in the Dodecanese. Rhodes and Karpathos are both larger than Kos. According to the 2021 census, the island has 37,089 residents. This makes it the second most populous island in the chain. The main town and seat of the municipality is Kos town.

The geography of the island includes a long coastline. This coast stretches from the west to the east. Several prominent points of land, called promontories, define the shape of the island. Cape Skandari sits in the northeast. Cape Lacter is located in the south. Cape Drecanum marks the western side.

Aside from the main town, many villages exist. These include Kardamena, Kefalos, and Antimachia. Smaller settlements like Zia and Platani are also found across the land.

Kos has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This weather supports two main economic industries. Tourism is the primary industry for the island. The beaches are the main attraction for visitors. Kos town serves as a cultural and tourist center. It features many whitewashed buildings, hotels, and restaurants. The village of Kardamena is a popular resort for travelers from Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.

The island has seen growth in luxury tourism recently. Between 2014 and 2023, the number of five-star hotels nearly doubled. Specifically, five-star hotel units increased by 95.83%. The total number of five-star beds grew by 103.32%. Four-star hotels also increased by 34.15% in units.

Farming is the second major occupation on the island. The local soil supports many different types of crops. Farmers grow grapes, almonds, and figs. They also produce watermelons, olives, and tomatoes. Wheat and corn are also grown in the fields. One famous product is Cos lettuce, also known as romaine lettuce. This variety of lettuce is named after the island because it is said to have originated there.

The history of Kos reaches back to ancient mythology. Homer's Iliad mentions Koans fighting in the Trojan War. In mythology, the king Merops was a founder of the island. It was also considered the birthplace of the goddess Leto. The island was later inhabited by Dorians in the 11th century BC. These settlers brought the cult of Asclepius to the island.
