The Goguryeo people were very skilled at fermenting food. Baekje was known for eating cold and fermented foods. Each of these ancient kingdoms had its own unique styles.

New foods arrived as Korea traded with the wider world. During the Goryeo period, the Mongols arrived in the 13th century.

This era brought dumplings called mandu and grilled meats. Later, during the Joseon period, new crops arrived from the New World. These included chili peppers, corn, and sweet potatoes.

These new plants grew well in many different soils. By the 19th century, trade with the West brought even more variety. This helped shape the many dishes we see today.

Today, Korean food connects the past to the modern world. In the 1970s, meat eating began to grow very quickly.
