The Koch family is a famous American family in business. They own Koch Industries, which is a very large company. In 2019, the company made $115 billion in revenue. It is the second largest privately owned company in the United States.

The family is also well known for its work in politics. They use their wealth to support many different groups and ideas. This has made them very influential in the United States.

Their business story began with a man named Fred C. Koch. He was a chemical engineer and an entrepreneur. Fred found a new way to refine heavy crude oil into gasoline. This special method is called a cracking method.

He started the oil refinery firm that became Koch Industries. His wife was Mary Robinson Koch. The company even named a tanker vessel after her. Fred and Mary started the Fred and Mary Koch Foundation in 1953.

Fred and Mary had four sons. These sons were Frederick, Charles, David, Bill, and Elizabeth.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the brothers had legal fights over the business. By 2019, only Charles and David Koch were still running Koch Industries. Charles is the chairman and chief executive officer. David was an executive vice president. David Koch passed away in August 2019.

Charles and David built a large political network. This network has about 500 donors and groups. They support libertarian and conservative ideas. They give money to many think tanks and organizations.

For example, they helped create the Cato Institute in 1974. They also gave a lot of money to The Heritage Foundation. In 2016, they planned to raise almost $880 million for elections. Their work reaches into television and advertising too.

This family uses money to change many things. They support arts, education, and medical research. They also worked with the ACLU to change prison laws.

However, they also support groups that doubt climate change. They have given money to people who deny man-made climate change. This work has changed how some political parties view science. The Koch family continues to be a major force in American life.
