The Koch family is a prominent American family known for business and politics. They control Koch Industries, a massive private company. In 2019, the company reported revenues of $115 billion. This makes it the second largest privately owned company in the United States. The family is also famous for its influence in American political systems. They use their wealth to support many different ideas and organizations.

The business started with Fred C. Koch, a chemical engineer and entrepreneur. He developed a new cracking method for oil refinement. Cracking is a process used to turn heavy crude oil into gasoline. Fred founded the oil refinery firm that eventually became Koch Industries. His wife was Mary Robinson Koch. The company even named a tanker vessel, the Mary R. Koch, after her. Fred was also a founding member of the John Birch Society.

Fred and Mary had four sons: Frederick, Charles, David, Bill, and Elizabeth. During the 1980s and 1990s, the brothers engaged in legal battles over their business interests. By 2019, only Charles and David Koch remained with Koch Industries. Charles serves as the chairman and chief executive officer. David served as the executive vice president until his death in August 2019. Other family members, like Chase Koch, hold leadership roles in newer areas like technology.

The family manages several non-profit organizations. These include the Fred and Mary Koch Foundation, established in 1953. They also manage the Charles Koch Foundation and the David H. Koch Charitable Foundation. These groups aim to advance liberty and freedom. They support social progress and sustainable prosperity. They also fund research, the arts, education, and medical research. This funding helps many different types of causes across the country.

Charles and David Koch built a massive political network. This network includes about 500 libertarian and conservative donors and groups. They use financial revenue for television and multi-media advertising. In 2008, their political contributions gained widespread media attention. They have given over $100 million to various policy and advocacy groups. This includes groups like The Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute. In 2016, they intended to raise nearly $880 million for elections.

The family's influence extends to public policy and law. Charles Koch helped create the Cato Institute in 1974. This think tank is ranked among the top 25 most influential in the U.S. In 2015, the Kochs worked with the ACLU on criminal justice reform. They specifically focused on civil asset forfeiture. They also pushed for changes to federal sentencing guidelines. Their goal was to help reduce prison populations through these legislative changes.

One major area of their activity involves climate change science. The brothers have supported institutions that deny or downplay man-made climate change. In 1991, they were involved in the first known gathering of climate change deniers. This meeting was organized by the Cato Institute. It helped shift how the Republican Party viewed global warming. They have funded individuals, such as Willie Soon, who reject climate science. This funding supports groups like Americans for Prosperity that oppose clean energy laws.

Despite their conservative reputation, the family has supported diverse causes. Charles Koch has expressed views that differ from some Republican leaders. For example, he has supported pro-choice policies and same-sex marriage. He also worked with the Obama administration on criminal justice reform. This shows that their political network can address many different social issues. The Koch family remains a powerful force in both the economy and American government.
