It was located in parts of Eritrea and Ethiopia. It also spread into parts of Arabia. Aksum grew from an older group called D'mt. By the 1st century, Aksum was a real kingdom. Its capital city was Axum.

Aksum was very rich from trade. They traded goods like ivory and tortoise shells. They even made their own coins.

These coins have been found far away in India. This shows how big their trade was. In the 4th century, King Ezana changed the land. He made Christianity the state religion.

This helped Aksum connect with the Roman world. The people built huge stone towers called stelae. These were tall and made of granite.

Later, King Kaleb led a group to Yemen. He wanted to help Christians there. Aksum was a great power for many years. But by the 7th century, it began to fade. Trade slowed down and the city shrank. The kingdom finally fell around the year 960.
