King's Quest is a famous series of graphic adventure games. These games were made by a company called Sierra Entertainment. They are considered classics from the golden era of adventure games. Most of the games were designed by Roberta Williams. She was a co-founder of Sierra. She designed the games until a reboot in 2015. The series follows the royal family of the Kingdom of Daventry. They face many trials and adventures in different lands.

To play these games, you must solve many tricky puzzles. You often find items and keep them in an inventory. You use these items to move through the story. Some puzzles involve mapping out a maze or a desert. You might also have to solve a riddle. You must use all your senses to find clues. This means you look, listen, smell, taste, or touch things. Using logic and lateral thinking is very important to win.

The history of the series began with early ideas. The concept came from an early game called Wizard and the Princess. This was also known as Adventure in Serenia. Roberta Williams used fairy tales for inspiration. She especially loved reading the books by Andrew Lang. Many characters and monsters come from old myths and folklore. These stories make the game worlds feel very special. The games take place a long time ago in the past.

Many specific games were released between 1980 and 2016. In 1980, the first game was Wizard and the Princess. King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown came out in 1984. In this game, Sir Graham must defeat the witch Dahlia. King's Quest II: Romancing the Throne was released in 1985. This game follows Graham as he searches for Queen Valanice. King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella arrived in 1988. This game used special software called the Sierra Creative Interpreter.

These games changed how computer games looked and worked. They were pioneers in using animation for characters. They even used pseudo-3D environments. This allowed a character to walk behind objects on the screen. This made the worlds feel much deeper. Many other games from Sierra used jokes or characters from King's Quest. For example, the character Cedric appeared in other games. The series remains a huge part of gaming history.
