Many people call her the "Queen of adventure games." This is because she helped create a new way to play. She co-founded a company called Sierra On-Line with her husband, Ken Williams. She is known for making games that tell wonderful stories. These stories often feel like moving fairy tales. Her work has changed how people think about digital art.

Roberta uses her imagination to build new worlds. She often draws her ideas on paper first. To make her first big game, she used a special tool called a Versawriter. This was a graphics tablet used to trace images. She then turned those drawings into computer files. Her husband, Ken, wrote the code to make them work. This way, players could finally see pictures while they played. This method created the very first graphic adventure games.

Her journey began with a love for storytelling. As a young girl in Southern California, she imagined her own movies. She loved to create fantasy adventures to entertain her family. Later, she worked as a computer programmer in Los Angeles. She and Ken wanted to live in the woods. This dream led them to start their own business. They moved to a place near the Sierra Nevada mountains. This is how their company got its name, Sierra On-Line.

Roberta made many games that changed the industry. Her game Mystery House came out in 1980. It was a huge success and sold 10,000 copies. Later, she made the famous King's Quest series. King's Quest IV was very special because it had a female hero. This helped many more women enjoy playing games. She also made a scary game called Phantasmagoria in 1995. That game used real video of actors to tell a story. It cost $4 million to make and used 200 people.

Today, we can see her impact on all modern games. Her ideas about 3D movement were very new. In her games, characters could walk behind or in front of objects. This helped make digital worlds feel much more real. She has won many honors for her talent. These include the Industry Icon Award and the Pioneer Award. Even though she retired for a while, she still creates. In 2023, she released a new version of Colossal Cave. She continues to show us how stories and games go together.
