He was known as a megasavant. This means he had incredible memory and intelligence in certain areas. He lived in Utah and was born in Salt Lake City. Kim could remember almost everything he ever read. He could finish a whole book in about one hour. This was possible because of how he used his eyes. He scanned the left page with his left eye. At the same time, he used his right eye for the right page.

Kim's brain worked in a very different way. He was born with a condition called agenesis of the corpus callosum. The corpus callosum is the part that connects the two sides of the brain. In Kim's case, these nerves were missing. He also had damage to his cerebellum. The cerebellum is the part of the brain that helps you move your body. Because he lacked those main connections, his neurons made unusual paths. Scientists think these paths helped him have a huge memory. However, his brain structure made daily tasks very hard. He did not walk until he was four years old. He also struggled with motor skills, like buttoning a shirt.

Scientists wanted to learn more about how Kim's brain worked. In 2004, researchers at the NASA Ames Research Center studied him. They used special tools like MRI and CT scans. These tools help doctors see inside the body without surgery. They wanted to make a 3D view of his brain. A study in 2008 suggested Kim had FG syndrome. This is a rare genetic condition. It can cause an abnormally large head and low muscle tone. Kim lived in Murray, Utah, for much of his life. He died of a heart attack on December 19, 2009. He was 58 years old.
