He was well known for his work as a hacker. Hacking is when someone gains unauthorized access to a computer network. This means they enter a system without permission. Mitnick's life was full of big changes and many debates. Some people saw him as a criminal. Others thought his legal troubles were too harsh. His story helped the world understand how to protect networked computers.

Mitnick learned how to navigate systems at a very young age. In 1979, when he was only 16, he accessed a computer system called the Ark. This system belonged to the Digital Equipment Corporation. He broke into their network to copy software, which led to a conviction in 1988. Later, he became a fugitive for two and a half years. To hide his location, he used cloned cellular phones.

During this time, he also stole passwords and read private emails.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) eventually caught him in 1995. They found him in an apartment in Raleigh, North Carolina. At the time of his arrest, he had many cloned cell phones and false IDs. In 1999, he pleaded guilty to several charges, including wire fraud and computer fraud. A judge sentenced him to prison for a total of 68 months. He spent five years in prison before being released in 2000. His time in prison was very controversial among the public.

Many people felt the legal system was too strict with Mitnick. Supporters even made "Free Kevin" bumper stickers to show their support.

Some argued that the charges against him were not based on actual losses. His case helped create new laws for dealing with computer crimes. It also made people more aware of digital security. Even his capture was turned into a book called Takedown. This book was written by John Markoff and Tsutomu Shimomura.

After he left prison, Mitnick used his skills for good. He started a firm called Mitnick Security Consulting, LLC. He worked as a professional consultant and a public speaker. He taught companies how to defend themselves through social engineering. Social engineering is a way of testing security by looking at the human element. He also wrote four books, including Ghost in the Wires. Mitnick lived in Las Vegas for a time. He passed away from pancreatic cancer on July 16, 2023.
