He is often called Captain Crunch. He was a computer programmer and a person who explored phone networks. People in the computer security world know him well. He was a colorful person in Silicon Valley. He even met Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs before they started Apple Computer. Draper was very good at understanding how technology works. This skill helped him explore the telephone network in new ways.

In the 1970s, Draper learned how to use sounds to control phones.

He found that a toy whistle in Cap'n Crunch cereal made a specific sound. This sound was a 2600-hertz tone. When this tone played into a phone, it told the system to enter a special mode. This allowed people to make long-distance calls for free. Draper built a device called a blue box to play these tones. A blue box is an electronic tool used to control the phone network. This way of working was called phone phreaking.

His journey into technology started very early in his life. Draper was the son of an Air Force engineer. As a child, he built a radio station from old military parts. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1964. While in the service, he helped others make free calls home. In 1967, he even started his own pirate radio station in Maine. After he left the military in 1968, he moved to California. He worked on early designs for cordless telephones during this time.

His work with phone tones led to many legal troubles. In 1972, the FBI arrested him for fraud. This happened because he made illegal long-distance and international calls. He later went to federal prison in Lompica, California. He was the first phone phreak to spend time in a federal prison. While he was in jail, he did something very productive. He wrote EasyWriter, which was the first word processor for the Apple II. A word processor is a computer program used for typing text.

Draper's life shows how one person can influence big companies. He worked as a contractor for Apple in 1977. He built a device called the Charley Board for Steve Wozniak. This board was meant to dial toll-free numbers automatically. Apple decided not to sell the device as a product. Later, he worked as a software designer for a company called Autodesk. His many different jobs show how much he knew about electronic signals. His story is a big part of how we understand computer security today.
