Laurence Kim Peek was an American megasavant with an extraordinary mind. A savant is a person who has exceptional abilities in specific areas despite having other developmental challenges. Peek was known for his incredible memory and high intelligence in certain subjects. He lived in Utah and was born in Salt Lake City on November 11, 1951. His life was a unique mix of extreme mental talent and significant physical difficulties. He became a famous figure after inspiring a major Hollywood film.

Peek's brain functioned through a very unusual biological structure. He was born with agenesis of the corpus callosum. This is a condition where the nerves that connect the two hemispheres of the brain are missing. In Peek's case, secondary connectors like the anterior commissure were also absent. Scientists speculate that his neurons created unusual connections to compensate for this absence. These unique paths may have resulted in his massive memory capacity. He also had damage to his cerebellum, which is the part of the brain that coordinates motor activities.

This unique brain structure created a sharp contrast between his mental and physical skills. While his memory was vast, his motor skills were often limited. He did not walk until he was four years old, and even then, he walked in a sidelong manner. He struggled with ordinary tasks like buttoning a shirt. During psychological testing, his IQ was measured at 87. However, experts believe this was not a valid measure of his true cognitive ability. This is because he scored very high on performance sub-tests but lower on verbal sub-tests.

Peek's ability to process information was truly remarkable. He could read an entire book in about one hour. He did this by scanning the left page with his left eye and the right page with his right eye. He could remember almost everything he read, covering topics like history, literature, geography, and music. It is estimated that he could accurately recall the contents of at least 12,000 books. From the age of 16 to 20 months, he was already memorizing information. He would place books upside-down on his shelf to show he had finished them.

His life changed significantly due to his encounter with screenwriter Barry Morrow in 1984. Morrow met Peek in Arlington, Texas, and was deeply impressed by his abilities. This meeting inspired the 1988 film *Rain Man*, which featured a character named Raymond Babbitt. While the character was depicted as having autism, the role was heavily inspired by Peek. The actor Dustin Hoffman studied Peek to ensure his performance was accurate. Following the film's success, Peek's self-confidence grew. Morrow even gave Peek his own Oscar statuette to carry during public appearances. This became known as the "Most Loved Oscar Statue" because so many people held it.

Scientists were very interested in studying Peek's biology to understand his abilities. In 2004, researchers at the NASA Ames Research Center used non-invasive technology to examine him. They used computed tomography (CT scans) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create a 3D view of his brain. They compared these images to MRI scans taken in 1988. A 2008 study suggested that Peek likely had FG syndrome. This is a rare genetic syndrome linked to the X chromosome. It can cause physical anomalies such as macrocephaly, which is an abnormally large head, and hypotonia, or low muscle tone.

Throughout his life, Peek relied heavily on his father, Francis "Fran" Peek. After his parents divorced in 1975, Fran became Kim's sole caregiver and manager. He acted as a facilitator, helping Kim with the motor tasks that his damaged cerebellum made difficult. Even after gaining fame, Kim lived in Murray, Utah, and often visited the Salt Lake City Library. He enjoyed showing off his talents, such as calculating the exact day of the week a stranger was born. Kim Peek died of a heart attack on December 19, 2009, at the age of 58. His legacy lives on through the Peek Award, which honors those impacting the perception of people with disabilities.
