Kiichiro Toyoda was a famous engineer from Japan. His family made machines for weaving cloth. Kiichiro had a big dream. He wanted to make cars.

Making cars was a big risk for the family business. His father did not agree at first. But Kiichiro studied hard. He went to a top university for engineering. He traveled to many places to learn. He saw that the car industry was just starting.

In 1933, he started a car department. It was hard work. No one knew how to make cars yet. It took six months just to make one engine! In 1937, Toyota Motor Corporation became its own company. Kiichiro changed the spelling of the name. He did this to bring good luck.

During a war, the company had to make trucks for the army. This was a very hard time. Kiichiro could not make the cars he loved. But he did not give up. He kept thinking about how to fix technical problems. He believed cars would help Japan again after the war. He helped lead the way for the car industry in his country.
