Kickboxing is a full-contact hybrid martial art. It combines punching and kicking techniques into a single discipline.

People practice this art for many different reasons. Some use it for self-defense or general fitness. Others compete in organized matches within a boxing ring. Fighters typically wear boxing gloves and mouth guards for protection. They also wear shorts and fight with bare feet. This bare-footed approach allows them to use kicks more effectively.

The mechanics of a kickboxing match depend on the specific ruleset. In many styles, fighters use their hands to strike and their legs to kick. Some variations allow for even more complexity. For example, certain rules permit the use of knees or clinching. Clinching involves holding an opponent close to control them. In styles like Sanda, takedowns and throws are also legal. This means a fighter might use their arms to trip or toss an opponent.

Many distinct styles of kickboxing exist across the globe. Japanese kickboxing is the source of the modern term. Dutch kickboxing is a unique blend of four different arts. It incorporates Japanese kickboxing, Muay Thai, boxing, and Kyokushin karate. Sanda is a Chinese style that includes striking and throwing. In France, Savate is a historical sport known for foot-kicking.

Other regional styles include Burmese Lethwei and Filipino Yaw-Yan. Lethwei is very intense because it allows headbutts and knees. It also does not use boxing gloves. In Lethwei, a knockout is the only way to win a match.

The history of combat sports stretches back to ancient times. Humans have engaged in hand-to-hand combat since prehistory. The earliest known depiction of boxing is a Sumerian relief from Iraq. In ancient India, the Mahabharata describes combat using fists, kicks, and headbutts. Ancient Greece also had a mixed martial art called Pankration. In its Anō Pankration modality, fighters could use any extremity to hit.

Modern kickboxing, however, began to take shape much later.

The modern era of kickboxing began in Japan during the 1950s. A karateka named Tatsuo Yamada wanted to create full-contact karate rules. He studied Muay Thai to help develop these new principles. In 1963, Japanese karate fighters traveled to Thailand to fight Muay Thai practitioners. This exchange helped evolve the sport's techniques and rules.

Later, a promoter named Osamu Noguchi introduced the term "kickboxing." He used this name to describe a hybrid of Muay Thai and karate. He founded the first kickboxing sanctioning body in 1966. American kickboxing emerged in the 1970s and gained prominence in 1974.

Today, the sport is managed by several different governing bodies. The World Association of Kickboxing Organizations, or WAKO, is very important. It is recognized as the official world governing body by the IOC. At the professional level, there is no single world championship. Instead, individual promotions issue their own champion titles. These include organizations like Glory, K-1, and ONE Championship.

Kickboxing is a highly interconnected and evolving discipline. It is considered a hybrid art because it mixes many traditions. Since the 1990s, it has helped lead to the rise of mixed martial arts. This happened through further hybridization with ground fighting. Techniques from Brazilian jiu-jitsu and folk wrestling were added to the mix. Many modern practitioners train in multiple styles at once. This cross-fertilization ensures that the history of these arts remains linked.
