The city sits right on the Rupsha and Bhairab Rivers. It is part of the Ganges Delta, which is the largest river delta in the world. Khulna is also known as the gateway to the Sundarbans. This is the largest mangrove forest on Earth and a home for the Bengal tiger. To the north of the city, you can find the Mosque City of Bagerhat. This special place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Many different industries make the city an important economic hub. Khulna is the third-largest economic center in Bangladesh. The city's economy relies on the sea and local factories. Many large companies are based here, including the Khulna Shipyard. People work in sectors like jute, chemicals, and food processing. They also work in sugar milling and power generation. The nearby Port of Mongla is the second-largest seaport in the country. This port helps the local economy grow by moving goods.

Khulna has a very long and interesting history. It was once part of ancient kingdoms like Vanga and Gangaridai. During the 12th century, it was ruled by the Sena dynasty. In the 14th century, Shamsuddin Firoz Shah became the first Muslim ruler there. Later, a saint named Khan Jahan Ali ruled a large area. He renamed the region Jahanabad during the 15th century. In 1611, a general named Raja Man Singh I defeated Vikramaditya. Eventually, the British East India Company took control in 1793.

Life in the city is busy and diverse. As of the 2022 census, the population was 719,557 people. Most people living here are Bengali. The native residents are known as Khulnaiya. Islam is the main religion, practiced by about 89% of the people. Hinduism and Christianity are also practiced by others.
