It is a core part of a larger tiger reserve and a biosphere reserve. This means the land is set aside to protect many different kinds of life. The park sits on the Ganges Delta and is next to forests in Bangladesh. It is one of the largest homes for the Bengal tiger. Many other animals live here too, like birds and reptiles.

Seven main rivers and many smaller channels flow through the delta. The area depends on the tides that move in and out twice every day. These tides can rise as high as 8 meters during a spring tide. When the water moves, it carries silt into the river channels. This silt settles and raises the bottom of the river. Over time, this process can actually create brand new islands and creeks.

A forest management division was first set up in 1869. In 1875, a large part of the mangrove forest became a reserved forest. By 1879, a forest division was created with its headquarters in Khulna, Bangladesh. The park has grown in importance through many official steps. It was named a wildlife sanctuary in 1977. Later, it was declared a national park on 4 May 1984. In 1987, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are many amazing facts about the plants and animals here.

The park gets its name from the Sundari tree, which is a special mangrove. These trees have roots called pneumatophores that grow above the ground. These roots help the tree breathe when the forest is flooded by water. Many endangered animals live in these woods and waters. You might find a Bengal tiger or a leopard cat.

In the water, there are Ganges river dolphins and even whales. Some creatures, like the horseshoe crab, are nearing extinction.

Visiting the park is an adventure because you must travel by boat.

The forest is made of 54 small islands that are hard to reach. Forest staff use motorboats and launches to patrol the area. They work hard to protect the animals from poachers. They even use things like human masks to keep tigers away from villages. This helps keep both the people and the tigers safe. It is a beautiful but difficult place where nature and water are always moving.
