Khomeynishahr

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Khomeynishahr is a busy city in the Isfahan province of Iran. It sits in the west of the province. The city is part of a large area called the Isfahan Metropolitan area. It is very close to the city of Isfahan, only 8 km away. Many other cities sit near it, such as Najafabad to the west. Borkhar and Maymeh are to the north. Falavarjan is located to the south.

The land here is very green and productive. A river called the Zayandehrud provides water for the soil. Because of this water, three-quarters of the land is made of large orchards. The rest of the land is used for fields. Farmers grow many things like wheat, barley, and cucumbers. They also grow melons, grapes, and cherries. The weather is dry and temperate. In the summer, it can reach 39 degrees. In the winter, it can drop to 8 degrees below zero.

This city has a very old history. Long ago, it may have been a military base for the Sassanid era. Some people believe the original name, Sedeh, means "three castles." This might be because three castles once grew into a town. These castles were named Kohan Dedge, Gar Dedge, and a third one. The city also has a large Grand Mosque in Khozan Alley. This shows that it was a very important city in the past.

The name of the city has changed many times. In the 1930s, it was called Homayunshahr. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, it became Khomeynishahr. This new name honors Ayatollah Khomeini. Some locals still call the city Sedeh. There is even an effort to change the name back to Mehrbin. The city is growing larger every year. In 2016, the census counted 247,128 people living there.

Today, Khomeynishahr is a place for both work and study. It has many historical buildings for tourists to visit. One famous building is called Sartip's house. The city also has many industrial zones for making things. Students can go to the Islamic Azad University of Khomeinyshahr. There is also the Isfahan University of Technology. This school is ranked as one of the best in Iran.
