The Khoekhoe are a group of people from Southern Africa with a deep history.

They are known for being nomadic pastoralists. This means they moved from place to place with their animals. They kept large herds of sheep, goats, and Nguni cattle.

This way of life helped them find food in fertile valleys. Their animals provided a steady and balanced diet for their communities. They were often grouped with the San people, who were hunter-gatherers. Together, these groups are sometimes called the Khoisan.

Living as a nomad requires many specific skills.

The Khoekhoe had to move their homes to find fresh grass for their herds. They lived in huts that could be moved when it was time to travel. They also used animals to help them move through the land. Some clans, like the ǀAwakhoen, were even known as the "Red People."

Their social life was built around these traveling groups and their livestock. This connection to the land and animals shaped everything they did.

History shows that the Khoekhoe have been in the region for a very long time.

Some scientists believe they diverged from other humans 100,000 to 200,000 years ago. A group called the "proto-Khoe" may have emerged between 400 BCE and 100 CE. They likely started in southern Zimbabwe and moved through Botswana and South Africa. By 500 CE, these herding groups were spreading steadily toward the south. They eventually moved into areas that were once home to foraging peoples. This movement helped spread their unique culture and language across the region.

Life changed greatly when Europeans arrived in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Portuguese explorers were among the first to meet them. During these encounters, many Khoekhoe people died from new diseases like smallpox. They also lost much of their grazing land to colonial farms. In 1652, there were about 600,000 Khoekhoe in Southern Africa. By the 19th century, many had to change how they lived. Some groups, like the Griqua, formed their own independent states in places like Griqualand West.

Today, many different groups carry on the Khoekhoe heritage.

The Nama people live in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. The Damara people are also found in Namibia. Some groups, like the Khoekua, became famous for being very skilled marksmen. They even lived in successful settlements like Kat River in the Cape Colony.
