He gave it the name Kentrosaurus, which means "sharp point lizard" in Greek. There was even a naming argument because the name sounded like another dinosaur. Eventually, the name Kentrosaurus was kept as the correct one.

German teams found over 1,200 bones from about fifty different Kentrosaurus. These bones came from four quarries in the Mittlere Saurierschichten and one in the Obere Saurierschichten. Some of these precious fossils were lost during World War II. Today, about 350 specimens are kept in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.

We can learn a lot by comparing Kentrosaurus to other creatures. It lived alongside giant sauropods like Giraffatitan and Tornieria. It also shared its home with meat-eaters like Elaphrosaurus. It featured a small, elongated head and a long neck. The animal had short forelimbs and long hindlimbs. It walked on all fours using straight, pillar-like hindlimbs. Because of its long, muscular tail, the center of mass was positioned unusually far back. This center of mass rested just in front of the hip. This position is typically seen in bipedal dinosaurs rather than quadrupeds. However, the robust forelimbs were strong enough to carry 10% to 15% of the bodyweight.

Armor and defense were key features of the Kentrosaurus anatomy. A double row of small plates ran down its neck and back. These plates gradually transitioned into sharp spikes on the hips and the tail. The longest spikes were located at the end of the tail. These spikes were used to actively defend the animal from predators. Additionally, a single long spike was located on each shoulder. These bony structures in the skin are called osteoderms. The weight of these osteoderms did not prevent the animal from staying mobile.

The feeding mechanism of Kentrosaurus was specialized for low-growing plants. The skull was long, narrow, and small in proportion to the body. It lacked premaxillary teeth, which suggests it had a horny beak called a rhamphotheca. This beak was likely restricted to the tips of the jaws. The animal used this beak to bite off plant material. This food was then processed in a large gut for digestion. The low position of the skull suggests it was a browser of low vegetation.

The history of Kentrosaurus discovery began with German expeditions to German East Africa. Between 1909 and 1912, researchers unearthed hundreds of bones. Expedition leader Werner Janensch recognized the fossils as a stegosaur on July 24, 1910. The German paleontologist Edwin Hennig later described the genus in 1915. He named it Kentrosaurus, which combines the Greek words for "sharp point" and "lizard." Hennig also added the specific name aethiopicus to show its African origin.

Many specimens were unfortunately destroyed during the Second World War. Today, the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin houses about 350 remaining specimens. There was also a naming controversy because the name was similar to the dinosaur Centrosaurus. While some suggested names like Kentrurosaurus or Doryphorosaurus, Kentrosaurus remains the valid name.

Kentrosaurus lived in a diverse ecosystem alongside many other famous dinosaurs. It coexisted with carnivorous theropods like Elaphrosaurus and Veterupristisaurus. It also shared its habitat with giant herbivorous sauropods, including Giraffatitan and Tornieria. The dryosaurid Dysalotosaurus was another contemporary of the Kentrosaurus. By studying these relationships, scientists can reconstruct the entire biological community of the Late Jurassic.
