Katherine Johnson was a brilliant mathematician who helped humans reach the stars. 

Her job involved many important steps to keep astronauts safe. First, she calculated launch windows, which are the best times to start a flight. Next, she worked out the trajectories for rockets to follow through space. She also planned emergency return paths in case something went wrong. For the Apollo 13 mission, she helped create a special way for the crew to find their location. She used a one-star observation system to help them navigate. This helped the crew find a safe way back to Earth. 
Katherine's journey with math began very early in her life. She was born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1918. She showed a great talent for numbers when she was a young child. Because of laws at the time, she had to travel to Institute, West Virginia, for school. She entered high school when she was only ten years old. She graduated from college at age 18 with degrees in mathematics and French. She even attended graduate school at West Virginia University. 
She began her career at a place called NACA in 1953. This group later became NASA. During this time, she worked in a section for African-American women. Even though there were laws that kept people separate, she focused on her important research. In 1961, she helped calculate the flight for Alan Shepard. Later, astronaut John Glenn asked her to check the numbers for his orbit. He trusted her math more than the new electronic machines. She also worked on the Apollo 11 flight to the Moon in 1969. 
Today, we remember Katherine Johnson as a true hero of science.

She also determined launch windows, the exact moments when a rocket can safely depart. For Project Mercury, she calculated emergency return paths to keep astronauts safe. During the Apollo 13 mission, she helped develop a one-star observation system. This method allowed the crew to determine their location by looking at stars. This was necessary because the mission had to be aborted, requiring a new path back to Earth.
Her career saw the transition from human-led math to digital computing. In the early years, she worked in the West Area computing section at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. This group was composed of African-American mathematicians. During this era, racial segregation laws required Johnson to use separate facilities from her white colleagues. However, she focused intensely on her research and the mission at hand. When NASA began using electronic computers, Johnson’s reputation for accuracy remained essential. Astronaut John Glenn specifically requested that she verify the computer's numbers before his orbit flight. He refused to fly unless she confirmed the calculations were correct.
Johnson’s mathematical journey began with extraordinary speed in West Virginia. Born Creola Katherine Coleman in 1918, she showed intense mathematical ability as a child. Because of local limitations for African-American students, she attended high school in Institute at age ten. She graduated from West Virginia State College at age 18 with degrees in mathematics and French. She later became the first African-American woman to attend graduate school at West Virginia University. This was made possible by the 1938 Supreme Court ruling in Missouri ex rel. Gaines v. Canada. This ruling required states to provide equal higher education opportunities for Black students.
Her contributions touched almost every major era of American spaceflight. She calculated the trajectory for Alan Shepard’s 1961 flight, the first American in space. 
Because of her brilliance, Johnson received many of the highest honors in the United States. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. 
Today, Johnson’s legacy is preserved through various scientific institutions. NASA named the Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility at the Langley Research Center in her honor.
