Katherine Johnson was a brilliant mathematician who helped humans reach the stars.

She worked for NASA for 33 years as a human computer. This meant she used math to solve hard problems for space travel. Her work was vital for the success of many early U.S. spaceflights. She helped find the right paths for rockets to follow. These paths are called trajectories. Without her math, astronauts might not have reached their destinations safely.

Her job involved many important steps to keep astronauts safe. First, she calculated launch windows, which are the best times to start a flight. Next, she worked out the trajectories for rockets to follow through space. She also planned emergency return paths in case something went wrong. For the Apollo 13 mission, she helped create a special way for the crew to find their location. She used a one-star observation system to help them navigate. This helped the crew find a safe way back to Earth.

Katherine's journey with math began very early in her life. She was born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1918. She showed a great talent for numbers when she was a young child. Because of laws at the time, she had to travel to Institute, West Virginia, for school. She entered high school when she was only ten years old. She graduated from college at age 18 with degrees in mathematics and French. She even attended graduate school at West Virginia University.

She began her career at a place called NACA in 1953. This group later became NASA. During this time, she worked in a section for African-American women. Even though there were laws that kept people separate, she focused on her important research. In 1961, she helped calculate the flight for Alan Shepard. Later, astronaut John Glenn asked her to check the numbers for his orbit. He trusted her math more than the new electronic machines. She also worked on the Apollo 11 flight to the Moon in 1969.

Many people know her story from the movie Hidden Figures. She received many high honors during her long life. President Barack Obama gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. NASA also named a building after her in 2017. It is called the Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility. She lived to be 101 years old. Her life shows how math can help us explore the whole universe.
