She used math to study the shape of our planet. Most people think the Earth is a perfect round ball. However, the Earth has bumps and dips caused by gravity and tides. Gladys worked to create models that showed this true shape. This shape is called a geoid. Her work on these models helped make the Global Positioning System, or GPS, possible. This system uses satellites to tell us exactly where we are on Earth.

To do this hard job, Gladys had to work with huge amounts of data. In the early 1960s, she helped with a study about the planets Pluto and Neptune. This project used a massive computer and required five billion calculations. She used punched cards to feed information into the machines. Later, she worked with satellite data to map the Earth's surface. She even managed a project called Seasat. This was the first satellite that could sense the oceans from space. Her clever ways of working cut the time needed to process data in half.

She preferred using paper maps because she liked to see the roads with her own eyes.

Many people now celebrate the amazing things Gladys achieved. In 2018, she was put into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame. She also received the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1986, she published a 51-page technical report titled "Data Processing System Specifications for the Geosat Satellite Radar Altimeter."
