She continued her education there, earning a Master of Science in 1975. By 1978, she completed a Doctor of Philosophy in physics. Her doctoral research focused on the interaction of X-rays with the interstellar medium, which is the matter located in the space between star systems.
Ride's path to space began with a massive selection process at NASA. In 1977, she applied to join the Space Shuttle program after reading an article about NASA recruiting women. She was one of 8,079 applicants who submitted forms by the deadline. Out of that large group, she was chosen as one of 208 finalists. During the interview process at the Johnson Space Center, she underwent rigorous medical examinations. These tests included being placed in a Personal Rescue Enclosure, a small ball 36 inches in diameter, to check for claustrophobia. In January 1978, she was officially selected as part of NASA Astronaut Group 8. 
Once selected, Ride underwent intensive training to prepare for mission specialist duties. This training included learning to fly the T-38 Talon jet aircraft. Although mission specialists were not required to be pilots, Ride enjoyed flying so much that she earned a private pilot's license. She even owned a part interest in a Grumman Tiger aircraft. During her time as a candidate, she also helped develop the Space Shuttle's robotic arm, known as the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (RMS). She also served as a ground-based capsule communicator (CapCom), which is the person who talks to the astronauts in space from the ground.
Ride made history through her two successful spaceflights. In June 1983, she flew on the STS-7 mission, making her the first American woman in space. 
After leaving NASA in 1987, Ride continued her contributions to science and safety. She worked at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Arms Control for two years. Later, she researched nonlinear optics and Thomson scattering at the University of California, San Diego. Ride also played a vital role in investigating space tragedies. She served on the committees that investigated the loss of the Challenger and the loss of the Columbia. She holds the distinction of being the only person to participate in both investigations.
Sally Ride's personal life was also a subject of historical importance. She was the first astronaut known to have been LGBTQ. While she kept this private during her career, her long-term partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, was identified in her obituary. Ride passed away in 2012 due to pancreatic cancer. Her legacy remains visible in the diverse group of people now working in STEM fields. She proved that one could be a world-class athlete, a brilliant physicist, and a historic astronaut all at once.
