Kashyapa is a very important sage in the Hindu tradition. A sage is a wise teacher who holds great respect. His name comes from the Sanskrit word for "turtle."

He is known as one of the Saptarishis. These are the seven ancient sages mentioned in the Rigveda. Many people see him as a very old and honored figure. He is even listed in the ancient Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. This book is one of the oldest sacred texts in Hinduism.

Kashyapa is linked to many different stories and ideas. He is credited with writing hymns in the Rigveda. These hymns are mostly found in Mandala IX. He and his students wrote songs for the Soma sacrifice. This was a special ritual involving a substance called Soma.

His name appears in many other old books too. For example, the Atharvaveda mentions him in its cosmology hymns. Even the Buddha spoke of him in Buddhist texts. The Buddha called him one of ten early sages.

Many different legends describe his family and his life. The stories are not always the same in every book. In the Ramayana, he is called Arishtanemi. The Vishnu Purana says he married thirteen daughters of Daksha. These wives included names like Aditi, Diti, and Danu.

Some scholars think he may have actually married twenty-one women. He is often described as the father of many living things. This includes the Devas and many other creatures. Some stories say he is the son of Marichi.

There is a famous story about a mistake he made. Kashyapa once performed a special ritual called a yajna. He needed many offerings like milk and ghee for this. The god Varuna gave him a holy cow to help. This cow provided limitless offerings for the ritual. However, Kashyapa became greedy and kept the cow.

This made the god Brahma angry. Brahma cursed him to be born again as a man. This man was named Vasudeva, the father of Krishna.

Kashyapa's name is also tied to famous places and books. Some believe the name Kashmir comes from his name. One idea is that it means "the lake of Kashyapa."

Other legends say he drained a huge lake to make the land livable. His name is also found in many old medical books. One book, the Kashyapasamhita, is about caring for babies. There are also books about music and building things named after him. His legacy lives on in these many different ways.
