Kashyapa was a very important sage in the Hindu tradition. A sage is a wise teacher. His name means "turtle" in the Sanskrit language. He is one of the Saptarishis. These are seven ancient sages from the Rigveda.

Kashyapa is found in many old books. He is mentioned in the Vedas and the Upanishads. These are sacred texts. The Buddha also spoke of him. He called him one of the early sages. Some stories say Kashyapa helped make the land of Kashmir. They say he drained a large lake to make the land livable.

Many legends tell of his family. Some books say he married thirteen daughters of Daksha. He is said to be the father of many living things. One story tells of a mistake he made. He kept a holy cow that belonged to a god. This act was driven by greed. Because of this, he was cursed to be born as a man named Vasudeva. Vasudeva was the father of Krishna.
