Kapila was a very important sage in the Hindu tradition.

He is known as the founder of the Samkhya school of philosophy. Samkhya is one of the six main schools of Vedic philosophy. This system uses a dualistic way of thinking about the world. Kapila is credited with writing the Samkhya-sutra, which is also called the Kapila-sutra. These are short, powerful ideas that explain his teachings.

Later texts like the Samkhyakarika helped explain these important ideas.

Many people have different stories about who Kapila was. Some believe he lived in the 7th century BCE. Other scholars suggest he lived in the 6th century BCE. This places him in the late Vedic period. He is often described as a Vedic sage. In some texts, he is shown as the student of Āsuri. Together, they are seen as the first masters of Samkhya.

His ideas were so strong that they may have influenced the Buddha.

In the Hindu tradition, Kapila is often seen as an incarnation of Vishnu. An incarnation is when a god is born as a person on Earth. The Brahmanda Purana says the Lord of the universe was born as Kapilācārya. Some stories say he was the son of the sage Kardama and Devahūti. In this story, Kapila taught his mother about the philosophy of yoga.

Other texts, like the Narada Purana, list different ways he is connected to the gods.

Kapila also taught important lessons about how to live a good life. In the Mahabharata, he is shown defending the principle of ahimsa. Ahimsa means non-violence toward all living things. He argued that people should not be cruel to animals during sacrifices. The Baudhayana Dharmasutra even says he helped create rules for an ascetic life. An ascetic is someone who lives a simple life to focus on spiritual study. He suggested that people should not hurt others in thought or deed.

His name and legacy are found in many places today. Many historic people and mythical figures in India share his name. There are even pilgrimage sites named after him where people go for special journeys. You can even find an ancient variety of cow that carries his name. In art, he is often shown sitting in a calm pose with closed eyes. This shows he is focused on deep meditation. His life remains a big part of Indian history and thought.
