Many different groups have ruled the city over time. This includes the Assyrians, the Byzantines, and the Seljuks. The city was also part of the Ottoman Empire for a long time. In 1973, the name was changed to Kahramanmaraş. The word "kahraman" means "heroic" in Turkish.

Life in the city has seen many changes and hard times. During the 19th century, many non-Muslim people moved to the city. In 1915, there was much conflict involving Armenian and Turkish groups. This period included many deaths and the deportation of people. Later, the city saw different leaders and many wars. In 1978, a violent event called the Maraş Massacre took place. This led the government to declare martial law in 1980. These events are a heavy part of the city's story.

In recent years, the city has faced a very big disaster. On 6 February 2023, a powerful earthquake struck the region. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8. The center of the quake was near Pazarcık and Elbistan.
