It serves as the administrative center for the Kahramanmaraş province. The city sits on a plain at the base of Mount Ahır. A key hydrological feature is the Ceyhan River. This river flows from the mountains surrounding the Elbistan Plain. The city center reaches an elevation of 568 meters above sea level.

The area experiences a Mediterranean climate. This means summers are very hot and dry. The highest temperature was recorded on 14 August 2023. Winters are generally cool and wet. The coldest temperature occurred on 6 February 1997.

The history of the city spans several ancient civilizations. During the early Iron Age, it was the capital of Gurgum. This was a Syro-Hittite state. Local Luwian inhabitants called it the Kurkumaean city. The Assyrians referred to it as Marqas. In 711 BC, the Assyrians annexed Gurgum as a province. Later, the Romans and Byzantines called the city Germanicia.

Different spellings like Germanikeia were also used. Archaeological ruins of the Kurkumaean settlement exist in the Dulkadiroğulları quarters.

During the medieval period, the city changed hands many times. It was a seat for an eparch in the Byzantine Empire. The city was lost to Muslim rule in the 7th century. During the rule of al-Mansur, many Christians were resettled in Palestine. In the 11th century, the city became a stronghold for exiled Armenians. It served as the capital for the principality of Philaretos Brachamios. The city suffered a major earthquake in 1114. This event killed 40,000 people. Various groups like the Danishmends, Seljuks, and Crusaders fought for control. The Beylik of Dulkadir ruled the area until the Ottoman Empire annexed it in 1515.

The modern era brought significant demographic and political shifts. In the 16th century, the population was around 7,500 people. By 1914, the population had grown to 32,700. The city saw intense conflict during World War One. In 1915, Armenian groups and Turkish forces engaged in violent clashes. This led to the deportation of 20,000 Armenians. Following the war, the French occupied the region. Turkish nationalist forces regained control in February 1920. This transition involved heavy losses for both Turkish and Armenian populations. In 1973, the city was officially renamed Kahramanmaraş. The prefix "kahraman" means "heroic" in Turkish to honor the Battle of Marash.

Political instability continued into the late 20th century. In December 1978, the Maraş Massacre occurred. This involved violence against leftist Alevis by a nationalist group. More than 100 people died during this event. This violence influenced the Turkish government to declare martial law. This eventually led to the military coup in 1980. Despite these struggles, the city has grown steadily. The population reached 559,873 by 2021. It remains a significant urban center in the Mediterranean region.

A massive natural disaster struck the city recently. In February 2023, a powerful earthquake occurred. It had a magnitude of 7.8. The epicenters were in Pazarcık and Elbistan.

Much of the city was destroyed by the shaking. An estimated 17.37 percent of the city was ruined. This disaster was devastating for the local population. Sadly, more than 50,000 people died in the earthquake. The city center faced the hardest impact.

Today, Kahramanmaraş is famous for its unique culture and industry. It is the birthplace of Turkish ice cream, known as dondurma.

Many international companies like MADO started here. Thousands of visitors come to the city to try this ice cream. The city also offers outdoor activities. The Yedikuyular Ski Resort is located at a high elevation nearby. This makes it a destination for winter sports. The city continues to be an important part of Turkey's economic and social landscape.
