Joseph Marie Jacquard was a clever weaver from France.

He lived a very busy life with many different jobs. He worked as a silk merchant and even made straw hats. He also tried his hand at making cutlery and working with books. In 1804, he began working on a special invention. This machine was called the Jacquard loom.

It changed how people made beautiful, patterned fabrics.

To understand the loom, you must first see how weaving works. Parallel threads called warp threads stretch across a frame. A different thread, called the weft thread, passes through them at a right angle. For plain cloth, the machine just lifts every other warp thread. However, making complex patterns by hand is a very slow and hard job.

Jacquard wanted to make this whole process automatic.

The loom works using a chain of stiff, punched cards.

Each card in the chain represents one row of a design. The cards have holes punched in specific spots. When the machine runs, these cards tell the loom which warp threads to lift. If there is a hole, a hook can pass through to lift a thread. If there is no hole, the solid card pushes the hook away. This simple way of working allows the machine to follow a pattern.

Jacquard did not invent this idea all by himself. He built upon the work of other French inventors. Basile Bouchon used punched paper in 1725 to help select threads. Later, Jean Falcon used a chain of cards in 1737. Jacques de Vaucanson also worked on these ideas between 1747 and 1750.

Jacquard studied these older machines to make his own version much better. He perfected his design by using the card system from Falcon.

Jacquard's invention became a huge success in France. In 1805, Emperor Napoleon and Empress Josephine even saw the loom in Lyon. The Emperor gave the patent to the city of Lyon. Jacquard received a pension and money for every machine sold. By 1812, there were 11,000 Jacquard looms being used in France.

This machine was very important for the future. It was one of the first programmable machines. This idea helped lead to the development of modern computers.
