Making silk with patterns by hand is very hard. It is slow and easy to make mistakes. Jacquard wanted to make this work automatic. He used a chain of punched cards. These are stiff cards with holes in them. Each card shows one row of a design. 
The machine uses these cards to pick threads. Parallel threads called warp threads stretch across the loom. A thread called the weft thread passes through them. The holes in the cards tell the machine which warp threads to lift. This lets the machine weave complex patterns on its own.
Many people used his loom. By 1812, there were 11,000 looms in France. This machine helped lead to modern computers. It was one of the first machines that could be programmed.

Jacquard received a pension and money for every machine sold. By 1812, there were 11,000 Jacquard looms being used in France.

A second thread, known as the weft thread, is passed through the space between the warp threads. This space is called the shed. In simple cloth, the machine raises every other warp thread to create the shed. However, creating elaborate patterns requires raising specific, non-sequential threads. Doing this manually is a slow and complicated process that is prone to human error. 
The Jacquard loom automates this selection process using a chain of pasteboard cards. Each card in the sequence corresponds to a single row of the textile design. These cards have holes punched into them in specific locations. The machine uses a series of hooks and a perforated cylinder to read these cards. When the cylinder presses the card against the hooks, the holes allow certain hooks to pass through. These successful hooks lift the corresponding warp threads to create the shed. If there is no hole, the solid part of the card pushes the hook away. This ensures those specific threads remain lowered. 
Jacquard did not invent these ideas in isolation; he improved upon several earlier French designs. In 1725, Basile Bouchon used a broad strip of punched paper and a row of hooks. However, his mechanism could only handle a modest number of warp threads. In 1737, Jean Falcon increased this capacity by replacing the paper strip with a chain of punched cards. Between 1747 and 1750, Jacques de Vaucanson improved the system by using long pins or needles. Vaucanson's design eliminated complex weights and cords by placing the mechanism above the loom. He also added a ratchet mechanism to advance the paper. Despite these steps, these earlier machines could not control enough threads for highly elaborate patterns.
Jacquard began his specific work on the loom around 1804. He studied Vaucanson's earlier designs at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers in Paris. By 1805, he had successfully combined ideas, specifically returning to Falcon's system of punched cards. His timing was significant because Napoleon Bonaparte was placing large orders for Lyon's silk to boost the French textile industry. 
The adoption of the Jacquard loom was not without struggle. Many silk weavers fiercely opposed the invention because they feared it would deprive them of their livelihoods. They believed the machine's ability to save labor would make their skills unnecessary. Furthermore, early sales were slow due to technical problems with the punched card mechanism. It was not until after 1815, when Jean Antoine Breton solved these mechanical issues, that sales increased significantly. Despite these hurdles, the machine became a standard in the industry. By 1812, there were 11,000 Jacquard looms in use across France.
Joseph Marie Jacquard's legacy extends far beyond the silk industry. His method of using holes in cards to represent data is a fundamental concept in computing. This early form of programming allowed a machine to follow a specific set of instructions to achieve a complex result. By automating the creation of intricate designs, he helped transition society toward industrial automation. Even though he lived a life of various trades, from type-founding to making straw hats, his most lasting contribution was providing the mechanical logic that would eventually help build the digital age.
