He moved to New York City as a young boy. He worked as a porter and a bouncer. Soon, he became a leader of a street gang. He even opened a pool hall for his group.

Torrio moved to Chicago in 1909. He worked for a man named Big Jim Colosimo. When new laws started in 1920, Torrio wanted to sell illegal alcohol. This was called bootlegging. After Colosimo was killed, Torrio became a top leader.

Torrio was a very smart organizer. People called him "The Fox." He taught Al Capone how to run a gang. Capone became his right-hand man. But things got dangerous in Chicago. In 1925, men attacked Torrio and his wife. Torrio was hurt by gunshots. He decided to quit the crime business. He gave control of the group to Capone.

Torrio later helped start a group called the National Crime Syndicate. This group helped gangs work together. In 1936, he was arrested for not paying taxes.
