Zenger was born in Germany in 1697. His family moved to New York in 1710. He learned his trade as an apprentice to William Bradford. Bradford was the very first printer in New York. Zenger later became a partner in that business. Eventually, he started his own printing shop on Smith Street. He even printed the first math book in New York in 1730.

In 1733, Zenger began a new job for local politicians. They hired him to print The New-York Weekly Journal. This paper was meant to speak out against the governor. The governor was named William Cosby. He was having a big fight with the colony council. This fight was mostly about his pay. Zenger used his paper to share opinions that were critical of Cosby. He even used a pen name called "Cato" for some pieces. These writings argued that truth should always be protected.

Governor Cosby did not like what the paper was saying. He called the reports scandalous and false. On November 17, 1734, the sheriff arrested Zenger. The Attorney General, Richard Bradley, charged him with libel. Libel is when someone prints things that hurt a person's reputation. Zenger had to stay in prison for more than eight months. He waited a long time for his day in court. The whole public was very interested in what would happen next.

Zenger had two lawyers to help him. Their names were Andrew Hamilton and William Smith, Sr. During the trial, the judge was James DeLancey. DeLancey was a supporter of the governor. Because of this, Hamilton had to speak directly to the jury. He argued that if a statement is true, it cannot be libel. The lawyers finished their work on August 5, 1735. The jury only took ten minutes to decide. They returned a verdict of not guilty.

This trial was a very important moment for history. It helped create the idea of freedom of the press. This means people should be able to print the truth. Even though the case was won, things stayed hard for a while. Some governors still tried to stop the press later on. However, the Zenger case laid the groundwork for these rights in America. Today, a large statue of Zenger stands in the Bronx. His name is even used for news services and ships.
