The paper shared ideas that upset the governor, William Cosby. The governor ordered the arrest of Zenger in 1734. Zenger was charged with libel. Libel is when someone prints things that hurt a person's name. Zenger went to jail for eight months. His lawyers, Andrew Hamilton and William Smith, Sr., defended him. They argued that truth is a defense. This means if the news is true, it is not libel. The jury agreed with them. They found Zenger not guilty in 1735. This case helped show why freedom of the press is important. It helped people share the truth with others.
