John Graham Lake was a very important leader in a religious movement called Pentecostalism. This movement began to grow in the early 20th century. Lake was known as a missionary and a faith healer. A faith healer is someone who believes God can make people well. He also helped start a large church group in South Africa. His work helped spread these religious ideas to many new people.

Lake's life changed through many different jobs and experiences. He was born in St. Marys, Ontario, in 1870. Later, his family moved to Michigan in 1886. He worked as a carpenter and a roofer. He also worked in real estate and life insurance. Some people say he was a successful businessman. Other historians believe he was a small-scale contractor.

In 1907, Lake's religious path took a big turn. He was part of a group in Zion, Illinois. This group was led by Thomas Hezmalhalch. After some trouble in Illinois, Lake and Hezmalhalch went to Indianapolis. They raised $2,000 to start a mission. In 1908, they traveled to South Africa. There, they founded the Apostolic Faith Mission.

Lake spent many years working as a missionary in Africa. He stayed there from 1908 until 1913. During this time, his first wife, Jennie, passed away in 1908. He continued his work while raising his seven children. His ministry was very important for religious growth in southern Africa. Some people even say his work helped shape many modern churches there.

After returning to America in 1913, Lake started new projects. He moved to Spokane, Washington, in 1914. He opened special places called "healing rooms." He ran these rooms in many different states. He worked in Washington, Oregon, and California. He even moved to Houston, Texas, in 1927. Lake lived a long life and died in 1935 at age 65.
