Daniel David Palmer was a man with many different ideas. He was born in Pickering Township, Canada, in 1845. Later, he moved to the United States in 1865.

He worked many jobs like a beekeeper and a teacher. He also owned a grocery store. Palmer was very interested in health and spiritualism. He believed that the body has a natural way to heal itself. He thought this power travels through the nervous system.

Palmer had a specific idea about how sickness works. He believed that if an organ was sick, it was not getting its right nerve supply. He called this problem a subluxation, or a spinal misalignment. To fix this, he used a method called chiropractic. He would move the spine to realign it. He believed this would help the nerves flow properly again. This way, the body could use its own strength to get well.

Many people say chiropractic began in 1895. Palmer was working in Davenport, Iowa, at that time. He met a man named Harvey Lillard who had trouble hearing. Palmer suggested a lump on Lillard's back might be the cause. He moved Lillard's back, and he claimed Lillard's hearing improved.

Lillard's daughter told a different story about this meeting. She said Palmer simply slapped her father on the back after a joke. Either way, this event inspired Palmer to study spinal movement.

Palmer's work grew very quickly after he started teaching. In 1897, he started the Palmer School and Cure in Davenport. This school later became the Palmer College of Chiropractic.

His son, B.J. Palmer, became one of his first students. Palmer also helped start other schools in Oklahoma, California, and Oregon. He faced some hard times in 1906. He was sent to jail for 17 days because he practiced medicine without a license. He eventually paid a fine and sold his school to his son.

Palmer's life was full of unusual beliefs. He was a spiritualist and said he got his ideas from a deceased doctor. He also practiced magnetic healing before he started chiropractic.

His personal life was also quite busy, as he was married six times. Palmer died in Los Angeles, California, on October 20, 1913. The official cause of his death was typhoid fever. Some people thought his death was linked to an accident with a car in Davenport. However, the courts said his son was not responsible.
