His father, Daniel David Palmer, was the man who started the field of chiropractic. B. J. Palmer earned the nickname "The Developer" because he helped the profession grow. He spent many years working in research clinics in Davenport, Iowa. B. J. believed that the upper cervical spine was the most important part of health. To help his work, he used tools like X-ray machines. He also used a special tool called a Neurocalometer.

B. J. Palmer had a very busy way of working and teaching. He and his wife, Mabel Heath, both worked as chiropractors. Mabel was an instructor at Palmer College and taught anatomy classes. They had one son named David Daniel Palmer. David was known as "The Educator" because he focused on teaching. David even went to the Wharton School of Business to learn how to manage the college. This helped him lead the school after his father passed away. The family worked hard to build a strong school for others to learn.

There is a famous story about a difficult time in B. J.'s life. In 1913, there was a big incident during a homecoming parade. His father filed a lawsuit claiming that B. J. hit him with a car. This led to many people wondering about the truth of what happened. Some people thought the event was linked to the death of D. D. Palmer later that year. However, historians have called these ideas myths. One eyewitness said that D. D. Palmer actually stumbled during the parade. Grand juries looked at the situation but did not bring any criminal charges.

B. J. Palmer was also a very clever businessman. In 1922, he bought a local radio station called WOC. He used the station to talk about chiropractic to many people. He also broadcasted weather, sports, and farm reports. A young man named Ronald Reagan even got his first radio job there. In 1930, B. J. also purchased a second station named WHO in Des Moines. These stations helped spread his ideas across the country through the airwaves.

B. J. Palmer lived a life full of travel and interesting things. He, Mabel, and David traveled through much of Asia together. B. J. wrote a book called "Round the World with B. J." about these trips. He lived in a large house in Davenport that is now called the Palmer Mansion. This house is on the United States National Register of Historic Places. It holds many souvenirs from his travels around the world. B. J. spent his final years living in Sarasota, Florida, until he died in 1961.
